Kremlin explains why Russia is ‘returning’ to Africa
Russia’s renewed efforts to strengthen ties with Africa come amid growing dissatisfaction across the continent with neocolonial influences, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia in an interview published Monday. He explained that after losing influence in Africa following the Soviet Union’s collapse, Russia is now regaining its strength and seeking to reestablish its presence.
Peskov noted that attitudes in Africa have shifted significantly, with many nations growing tired of neocolonial pressures. This change has coincided with Russia’s revitalized capabilities and ambition to reclaim its former role on the continent.
He emphasized that this growing partnership offers valuable opportunities for both African countries and Russia. Peskov’s comments align with those of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who reaffirmed Russia’s support for African nations striving to reinforce their sovereignty amid continued external pressures.
Strengthening relations with Africa has become a top priority for Moscow’s foreign policy. Countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and South Africa increasingly view Russia as a dependable partner, turning to it for cooperation in sectors like energy, security, trade, and education.
Several Sahel countries, including Chad, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, have cut defense ties with France and the US, frustrated by their inability to control jihadist violence and stabilize the region. These states have since sought Russia’s assistance in counterterrorism.
At the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum last week, South African Vice President Paul Mashatile announced plans to double trade with Russia and invited Russian businesses to invest in South Africa, which he described as a gateway to Africa’s market of over one billion people.
Earlier this month, Peskov outlined Moscow’s intentions to deepen cooperation with African nations, focusing on economic and investment relations alongside more sensitive areas like defense and security.
